Description

Chalice. Silver gilt and in its color. Spain, 17th century.
Chalice made of silver with a flared cup gilded on the
outer edge and inside and bulbous rose. Balustraded
shaft with smooth fillet, oval knot on a flared shape
(also with moldings or smooth fillets) followed by a
cylindrical body with a wide diameter. Circular
staggered foot forming decorated and smooth bands
of different lines. It presents decoration based on
smooth framed mirrors, cs facing each other as
parentheses, simple plant and floral motifs, geometric
shapes, etc. on a background worked in matt,
following rhythms with symmetry and order. The shape
of this chalice is reminiscent of outstanding examples
such as the one made in gilded silver during the
second half of the 17th century that is in the Naval
Museum of Ferrol (Spain), some in the Cathedral of
Santiago de Compostela, two in the Barbastro
Diocesan Museum -Monsoon etc. Regarding its
decoration, similar compositions can be seen in some
details in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid
(Agustin de Cuesta fountain, Granada, first third of the
17th century; Noval fountain, Tudela, second third of
the 17th century), etc. .
